A Note from the 2016-2017 WASA President
Welcome to the Wharton Africa Student Association (“WASA”), one of the largest and most vibrant student clubs at Wharton!
As a club, we welcome a diverse membership – everyone from students who are just curious about the continent or want to be part of our community, to those that are from Africa and passionate about representing it. Basically, we represent students and alumni with some interest in Africa.
When we look around us at our fellow classmates and WASA members, we’re assured that we will have a role in the future leadership of this amazing continent. This is especially relevant as Africa continues to grow faster than any other region over the next few decades, presenting social development and economic opportunities, and challenges.
We punch way above our weight. After all, WASA hosted the largest business conference at Wharton in the 2015 / 2016 year (650 attendees, 250 on the waitlist). WASA ran, on average, two campus events per month at lunch or in the evening – ranging from a Photography Session dispelling myths about Africa, to having the Managing Partner of Goldman Sachs Africa speak about economic opportunities in Africa. We hosted an Africa Private Equity Trek to Johannesburg and London, and led the school’s international engagement with Emerging Markets’ Week and International Week. And we work on the future – with a number of initiatives ongoing with Wharton Admissions and Wharton Career Services.
We are also a tight family, and do lots of fun stuff that builds our family. WASA hosts numerous lunches and brunches on campus, and Alumni socials in various locations. We have a trademark school wide party (Afrobeats) where we introduce everyone to African music plus the latest great songs. We have a weekend retreat for members, and we have days where we strut our African clothing (or anything that represents that) on campus.
WASA is an immensely proud and welcoming group of Wharton Students and Alumni. Spend time browsing through our website, and make sure you check out our pics and read our blog!
We look forward to meeting you, and welcoming you to our family.
